Original acrylic painting on masonite by Paul Bunch
Size: 18 x 24″
I wanted to paint a castle, but I wanted a different kind of castle. So I did some research on different European castles and found one I liked. Then I looked back through some old paintings I had done and found a composition in one where I could visualize the castle. Removing some of the original elements (a deer, some fallen logs, and some trees in the distant tree line) I inserted the castle. But we can only see the top part of the castle because it is in the valley on the other side of the hill, and I made it black instead of the typical light tan castles you always see. When I did a rough sketch, everything was unexciting until I added some dramatic side lighting coming through the trees, creating some dappled light on the top of the hillside.
