Graphic Design and Prepress Production Skills

Create magazine editorial layout design, logos, business cards, letterheads, brochures, magazine and newspaper ads, newsletters, business forms, etc. Have knowledge of press setup and multiple page imposition, and knowledge of newspaper and magazine production. Accustomed to working under tight deadlines and interacting with team members. Excellent skills in using graphic design principles, layout, composition, typography and color theory.

Excellent working knowledge of: Adobe Creative Suite 3: InDesign, Illustrator, PhotoShop, Acrobat; Microsoft Word, Outlook Express. Avidly pursuing continued learning in industry standard software applications.

Accustomed to adjusting values, color correcting, resizing, retouching, removing unwanted things and creating clipping paths for photos in PhotoShop. Can do multiple high resolution scans of  larger than typical scanner-sized art and then meld them together seamlessly. Can create complex vector art, such as technical illustration, maps, diagrams or cartoons in Adobe Illustrator using Bezier curves.

Adaptable to learning new proprietary or design software as needed in the course of workflow.  Examples are: AdTrack software for daily newspaper ad production and management in tandem with Quark Xpress/InDesign and Jazbox software in tandem with InDesign for the purpose of producing newspaper and magazine articles in print and on the Internet at the same time. Another example is WordPress blog software.

Work well as a team member, in a small group of team members, and especially when working one-on-one with a project manager. Besides working on smaller projects and meeting tight deadlines, have also worked successfully on large, complex projects that take several months, such as calendar design, book design and complex illustrations that take several weeks, such as covers and double truck newspaper pages, maintaining a high attention to detail. Have strong written and verbal communication skills. Good organizational skills.

Cartooning and Other Illustration

Can create cartoon illustration for magazine and newspaper editorials, books and book and magazine covers, greeting cards, and general advertising. Can also create realistic illustrations for same.

Video production: I have taken the Video Producer’s Workshop at RVTV in Ashland, and with my son, daughter and a cast and crew of 15-20 people, helped to produce the hour and a half comedy production “Batface and Birdbrain.”

Work Experience

7/02 to 7/10            Southern Oregon Media Group – Medford, OR  (Mail Tribune, Ashland Daily Tidings, The Nickel)

Worked with a team of 10-15 sales representatives and 4 Production Designers to produce ads for the Mail Tribune, Ashland Daily Tidings and The Medford Nickel in a PC-based, fast paced environment, sometimes starting and finishing ads within 2 to 3 hours. Utilized Quark Xpress and Adobe CS3. Produced many car dealership ads for The Nickel, some containing up to 20 cars, which needed clipping paths done in PhotoShop.  Adjusted multiple photos for color, contrast and sharpness to print clearly on newsprint.

Designer for Homelife magazine and other special publications. Production Designer for Mail Tribune and Ashland Daily Tidings newspapers, Joy, Homelife, Distinctly NW and Oregon Healthy Living magazines and The Medford Nickel. Processed camera-ready PDF ads for publication as well as produced ads from scratch for newspaper and magazines.

As Lead Graphic Designer and working in conjunction with department supervisor, two magazine editors and 3 to four Production Designers, helped produce the Mail Tribune’s monthly Homelife magazine: layouts for Interior and Garden feature articles, Table of Contents, Advertising Index, Contributors’ page. Adjusted multiple photos for color, contrast and sharpness to print clearly in magazines. Produced high-resolution, Homelife, glossy covers in collaboration with professional photographers and a commercial printer. On a specific monthly timetable, compiled camera-ready ads and imposed 44 – 48 page Homelife magazine pages complete with all articles and output negatives.

Assisted in the production of Joy Magazine and Distinctly Northwest magazine. Client service: Working closely with clients, produced special newspaper publications for Art in Bloom (downtown art festival), Providence Festival of Trees (annual Christmas event), Medford Cruise (annual classic car parade and show) and The Downtowner (a monthly summary of news and developments in downtown Medford).

Achievements: Helped develop the template for Distinctly Northwest glossy magazine. Produced several Flash animated ads for the Mail Tribune and Medford Nickel. Created illustrations for Our Valley annual glossy magazine covers: 2005, 2006, and 2007. Created cartoon illustrations for several newspaper editorials. Created several maps for ODOT-related publications and the Medford Viaduct Project technical illustration, which was used in a double-truck of the Moving Ahead with ODOT publication. 4/94 to 6/02     Mike’s Copy Service – Medford, OR

Prepress artist and designer. Using Quark Xpress in a Mac environment, designed numerous types of business forms, letterheads, business cards, brochures, flyers, etc. Illustration, cartooning, and product illustration produced as needed. Ordered negatives from service bureau and worked with pressmen to get proper setup and imposition of artwork in Quark Xpress. Preflighted customers’ electronic files for output on copy machines and offset press.  Achievements: Became adept with photo manipulation, retouching and photo illustration in PhotoShop. Learned Adobe Illustrator. Foreseeing that InDesign would become the popular page-layout software for graphic design implemented and used the program early on.
